How to Play Squares
Squares is a word-finding puzzle played on a 4×4 grid of letters. Drag your finger or cursor across adjacent tiles to spell out words, then release to submit. The goal is to find as many words as possible and earn the highest score.
1. Connect the letters
Press and drag across tiles on the 4×4 grid to form words. Tiles are connected in eight directions — horizontally, vertically, and diagonally. Each tile can only be used once per word, and every word must be at least four letters long. A snake line follows your path so you can see exactly which letters you have selected.
2. Score points
Each valid word earns one point per letter. Longer words are worth more — a seven-letter word scores 7 points. You can also discover bonus words that are not in the curated solution list but are valid English words. Bonus words earn extra credit toward your score.
3. Earn stars
Three star milestones track your progress. Reach 33% of the maximum score for your first star, 66% for the second, and 100% for all three. Use the rotation feature to view the grid from different angles and spot connections you might have missed. Up to three hints per game can help when you get stuck.
Tips for Squares
- Rotate the board. Looking at the grid from a different angle helps your brain notice letter patterns you overlooked before.
- Start with corners. Corner tiles have only three neighbors, making them easier to trace paths from.
- Look for common endings. Suffixes like -ING, -TION, -ATE, and -NESS can reveal longer, higher-scoring words.
- Drag backward to undo. If you overshoot a path, drag back over the previous tile to remove it without canceling your selection.
- Save hints for later. Hints are most valuable when you have already found the easier words and need help with the harder ones.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the rules of Squares?
Squares presents a 4×4 grid of letters. Drag across adjacent tiles (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) to form words. Each word must be at least four letters long, and each tile can only be used once per word. Release your drag to submit the word for validation.
Scoring: Every word earns 1 point per letter. Find bonus words — valid English words not in the curated solution list — for additional points.
How does the rotation feature work?
Tap the rotate buttons to spin the board 90 degrees left or right. The letters counter-rotate so they remain readable. Rotation does not change the puzzle — it simply gives you a fresh perspective on which tiles are adjacent, helping you spot words you may have missed.
When does the daily puzzle reset?
A new grid appears every day at midnight UTC. Every player receives the same grid, making it easy to compare results with friends. Your progress is saved automatically so you can return and continue at any time during the day.
Can I play more than one puzzle per day?
Yes! Unlimited mode generates a random grid every time you tap "New Board". Play as many puzzles as you like to practice your word-finding skills.
What is a bonus word?
A bonus word is a valid English word that can be formed on the grid but is not part of the curated solution list. Finding bonus words earns you extra points and is highlighted differently in your word list.
