Understanding Spelling Bee

Spelling Bee presents you with 7 letters arranged in a honeycomb pattern. Your goal is to find as many valid words as possible using these letters. Each word must be at least 4 letters long and must include the center (required) letter. Letters can be reused within a word.

Scoring and Ranks

Words score based on length: 4-letter words earn 1 point, and longer words earn 1 point per letter. Pangrams (words using all 7 letters) earn 7 bonus points. Your total score determines your rank, from Beginner through Good, Moving Up, Nice, Great, Amazing, Genius, and finally Queen Bee (finding every word).

Strategy 1: Start with the Center Letter

Since every word must contain the center letter, start by thinking of common words that begin with that letter. Then think of words where it appears in the middle or end. This systematic approach ensures you don't overlook obvious answers.

Strategy 2: Common Prefix and Suffix Patterns

Look for these productive patterns with your available letters:

  • UN-: UNDO, UNIT, UNTIL, UNDER, UNION
  • RE-: REDO, REAL, REIGN, REIN, REEL
  • -ING: Very productive if you have I, N, G
  • -TION: If you have T, I, O, N — many possibilities
  • -NESS: Add to adjectives if you have N, E, S
  • -ABLE/-IBLE: If you have A/I, B, L, E

Strategy 3: Systematic Letter Combination

Take each pair of available letters and think of words containing that pair. For example, if you have B and L, think: BALL, BELL, BILL, BULL, BLAME, BLEND, BLIND, BLOCK, BLOOM, BLOW, BLUE, etc. This combinatorial approach uncovers words you might otherwise miss.

Strategy 4: Think in Word Families

When you find one word, think about related words. Found BAKE? Try BAKER. Found TRAIN? Try TRAINING, TRAINER. Word families often yield multiple answers from a single discovery.

Strategy 5: Finding the Pangram

The pangram is the crown jewel of each puzzle. To find it:

  1. Write out all 7 letters
  2. Try rearranging them mentally into word-like combinations
  3. Think of 7+ letter words that could use these letters
  4. Consider compound-style words
  5. Remember: letters CAN repeat, so a 7-letter word doesn't have to use each letter exactly once

Strategy 6: Don't Forget Less Common Words

Spelling Bee accepts many words you might not commonly use. Think about:

  • Scientific or technical terms
  • Cooking and food-related words
  • Musical terms
  • Archaic but valid English words
  • Words from other languages commonly used in English

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Forgetting the center letter: Every word must include it
  • Stopping too early: There are usually more words than you think
  • Only trying long words: Short 4-5 letter words add up quickly
  • Ignoring repeated letters: LLAMA uses L twice — that is valid
